MITDS is a private higher education institution in the Upper East region of Ghana. The Institute is affiliated to the premier public university in northern Ghana, the University for Development Studies in Tamale, Ghana. It currently runs Masters and PhD Programmes in Culture and Development.
In the partnership with the Broos Institute, students will register for the Masters/PhD programmes in MITDS with options for regular or modular streams. The regular stream means the traditional approach where students have to attend school fulltime and attend lectures in-person.
Students are required to do a given number of modules or courses in a trimester. On the other hand, with the modular approach, students have the flexibility to take one course or module at a time combining face-to-face and virtual lectures and seminar presentations.
Target date: September 2025
The following courses will be offered in the Master's programme:
- Introduction to Endogenous Development
- Introduction to Indigenous Knowledge and Ethnography
- Sociology and Society
- Philosophy of Science
- Culture and Diasporanism
- Cultural Studies
- African Philosophy
- Development Theory and Change
- Social Anthropology
To enrol the Masters Programme, applicants must have the requisite Bachelors in the relevant fields.
For the PhD Programme, applicants must have research-based Masters Degrees (e.g. MPHIL); people without research-based Masters Degress will first require to undertake foundational courses to match-up Programme Requirements. There are mandatory core and elective courses that all must pursue in addition to any audited courses. These are offered in the form of Modules or Encounters. The minimum duration of the PhD is 3 years and maximum is 5 years.
