Afrocentric education places African perspectives, values, and histories at the center of learning. It challenges Eurocentric models by prioritizing the lived experiences, philosophies, and knowledge systems of Afro-descended communities. At the Broos Institute, Afrocentric education is the foundation of our master’s, PhD, and research programs, preparing students to engage critically with African culture, development, and global scholarship.
The Broos Institute will welcome its first cohort in January 2026 with the launch of the MPhil in African Culture & Development in Amsterdam. Our long-term vision includes a dedicated campus that will serve as a hub for Afrocentric higher education in Europe, providing space for teaching, research, and community engagement. Updates on campus development will be shared on our website and social channels.
The Broos Institute offers a range of academic pathways in Afrocentric higher education. Students can pursue short courses, master’s-level programs, and PhD and research opportunities. All programs focus on African philosophy, Afrocentric education, political theory, and social development, preparing graduates to contribute to both European and global scholarship.
Our programs are designed for students, professionals, and researchers who wish to study Afrocentric higher education in Europe and engage critically with African scholarship. Admission requirements vary by level:
- Short courses: open to all learners interested in Afrocentric education.
- Master’s programs: require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).
- PhD and research pathways: require a completed master’s degree and demonstrated research readiness.
Yes. The Broos Institute partners with the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS) in Ghana, providing students with access to African-centered faculty expertise, field-based learning in Ghana, and internationally relevant Afrocentric scholarship. These collaborations ensure our programs combine academic rigor with real-world context.
